African Union forces leave military outpost in Somali capital


MOGADISHU, Somalia – On Tuesday morning, African Union forces pulled out of a key military base at a former University compound in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

The AU mission has withdrawn its peacekeepers from Gahayr University campus, and handed it over to the Ministry of education for Somali Federal government during a ceremony in the facility.

UN envoy for Somalia, the head of AMISOM, chairman of Somali national University, education minister and other high-ranking officials has attended the hand-over event.

The University building which lies in Wadajir district has been housing for Burundian soldiers, serving with African Union Mission in Somalia known as (AMISOM) for about ten years in the past.

Somali Federal government has welcomed the move, and promised to rebuild the campus, and reinstate its educational status. AMISOM forces pledged support to Somalia in the efforts to restore peace.
